Road cycling in the Auvergne region
The Auvergne region guarantees a varied bike holiday. Straight out of our accommodation in Le Mont-Dore the climbs to the Col de la Croix Morand, the Col de Guéry, the Col de Croix Saint Robert and the climb to La Stèle begin. And if that is not enough, at 5 km distance the climbs to the Col de Vendeix, the Col de la Sœur and the Banne d'Ordanche begin.
This all in very diverse landscapes. From rough plateaus, volcano landscapes to forests with fast-flowing streams. Short and longer rides, with a variety of terrains from a lot of climbs to less climbs, everything is possible.
Near to Les Camelias some climbs that are part of the 1000 so-called BIG climbs can be found: the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, the Col de la Croix-Morand, the Col de Guéry, the Puy de Dôme and Col du Chevalard.
Obviously we have prepared routes for our cycling guests. All routes have each 7 distance variants. The routes start at around 30 miles and go up with about 10 miles to about 85 miles. On average each 30 miles of cycling will be 1000 meters of climbing.
Our printed directions include an elevation profile. The routes are not only available as printed directions, but also as GPS track. If you do not have a GPS yourself, you can rent one at Les Camélias.
As from 2011 we offer a bike tour of the Auvergne with luggage transport.
In six stages the participants will cycle through three middle mountain areas: the Massif du Sancy, the Livradois-Forez and the Cantal. Each day participants can choose from four distances: 50, 60, 69 and 78 miles. This trip can be booked as from 2 persons.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
Cycling to the sommet of the Puy de Dôme can temporary not be done. This extinct volcano was open for cyclists on Wednesday and Sunday morning between 7 and 9 am. Due to the construction of a tourist train, the Puy de Dôme will only be accessible to pedestrians from 2010 until June 2012.
Map 326 Allier, Puy-de-Dôme out of the Local-series of Michelin is particularly suitable for making your own routes. The map can be bought at specialised shops in the UK and in Le Mont-Dore.
